ITT Standard BCF, HCF & HFF Heat Exchangers — Brass Shell, Straight Tube

Brass-shell shell & tube exchangers for hydraulic oil cooling and general duty — plus drop-in replacements and tube bundles.

If the nameplate on your unit reads BCF, HCF, or HFF, you're looking at one of the most common shell & tube heat exchangers in the legacy ITT Standard installed base: a brass-shell, copper-tube, straight-tube fixed-tubesheet design built for fresh-water cooling of oils and other industrial fluids. The same model families remain in current Standard Xchange production (ITT Standard became Standard Xchange, today a Xylem brand), so your replacement is almost always a direct drop-in. Grab the model code off the nameplate and request a quote — your cross-reference and stock status usually come back the same business day.

BCF, HCF & HFF construction and specifications

Below are the standard datasheet values for the BCF / HCF / HFF family. Your nameplate model code pins down the exact shell diameter, tube length, and pass count within these ranges.

How to read a BCF model code

BCF part numbers follow a fixed five-field pattern — for example 5-030-04-024-001 is a 4″ shell, 24″ tube length, single-pass, narrow-baffle unit. Each field maps to a physical size or configuration, so the code on your nameplate tells you exactly what you have:

BCF vs. HCF vs. HFF: which model is on your nameplate?

All three families share the same brass-shell, straight-tube, fixed-tubesheet construction. The difference is configuration, not a different design. BCF is the pre-engineered, stocked baseline, built on 2" to 8" shells with heat transfer surfaces to 124 sq ft. HCF is assembled from the same BCF components for duties the stock models don't cover, extends the family's surface range to 247 sq ft, and is the variant offered with ASME code construction. HFF is the BCF design adapted with integral SAE flanged connections — for service where SAE bolting is required on the oil side — built on 5", 6", and 8" shells with surfaces to 247 sq ft. You don't have to work that out yourself — the nameplate model code settles it. Send the code or a photo of the tag for a same-day match.

Typical BCF heat exchanger applications

  • Hydraulic and lube oil cooling
  • Marine and engine jacket-water cooling
  • Air compressor cooling
  • Hydronic system heating and cooling
  • General liquid-to-liquid duty where the cooling water is non-corrosive fresh water

Replacing a BCF, HCF, or HFF heat exchanger

The model code on your nameplate identifies shell diameter, tube length, and pass count — everything needed to match the current production equivalent. To get a drop-in replacement confirmed:

  1. Copy the model code from the nameplate (a photo of the tag works too).
  2. Submit it with the quote form or call (770) 345-0010.
  3. You'll get the current equivalent, price, and stock status — usually the same business day.

A few common forks in the road:

  • Tagged American Standard instead of ITT Standard? Same lineage — your cross-reference works the same way.
  • Corrosive water or process fluid? Consider the SSCF stainless equivalent.
  • Don't need a brass shell? The steel-shell SX2000 covers general industrial duty at the same pressure ratings.

Tube bundles, gaskets, and parts only

A fouled or leaking bundle doesn't always mean buying a whole new exchanger. Replacement tube bundles, gaskets, and zinc anodes for serviceable units are listed on the parts page — or request a parts quote with your model code, and the right components come back matched to your unit.

Sizing help for a new or upgraded duty

No nameplate to copy? Send your duty conditions — fluids, flow rates, inlet and outlet temperatures, allowable pressure drop — and you'll get a sized recommendation from the current Standard Xchange line, with pricing. Start a sizing request.

Why buy through Southgate Process Equipment

Southgate Process Equipment in Canton, GA has been an authorized Standard Xchange distributor for 25+ years, with common BCF sizes and parts stocked for immediate delivery at factory-authorized pricing. Whether you need a drop-in replacement, a bundle, or a from-scratch sizing, your quote usually comes back the same business day.
