Steel-shell shell & tube exchangers — the current replacement for many legacy BCF units.
View specsShell & tube is the backbone of the ITT Standard line — straight-tube, fixed-tubesheet designs that have been in production for decades and remain the most economical choice for oil cooling, water-to-water duty, steam heating, and general process work. The same model families ship today under the Standard Xchange name, so if your nameplate says ITT Standard, your replacement is usually a direct drop-in. Whether you need a complete unit, a replacement tube bundle, or a fresh sizing for a new application, this page shows you which model family fits — and how to get a quote from nothing more than a nameplate photo.
ITT Standard shell & tube model families
BCF / HCF / HFF — brass shell, copper tubes. The workhorse fixed-tubesheet series for fresh-water cooling of oil and other fluids. Compact, economical, and stocked in the most common sizes, with shell diameters from 2" to 8". BCF / HCF / HFF details →
SSCF — 316 stainless steel. The same straight-tube, fixed-tubesheet design in all-316 stainless construction for corrosive fluids, deionized water, and sanitary-adjacent process duty. SSCF details →
SX2000 — steel shell. Steel shell with copper tube bundle for general industrial duty where brass isn't required. SX2000 details →
Century Series — custom engineered. When a catalog unit doesn't fit — special materials, TEMA class requirements, ASME Section VIII code work, U-tube or removable-bundle designs — Century Series units are engineered to your duty conditions. Removable-bundle needs are covered too: U-tube B300/SX2000U units handle thermal expansion and thermal shock where a fixed tubesheet can't. Send your conditions for a custom sizing.
Brass, stainless, or steel: choosing your shell & tube material
Match the shell material to the fluids on each side of your exchanger:
- Brass shell, copper tubes (BCF / HCF / HFF) — your default for fresh cooling water against oil or other clean fluids.
- 316 stainless (SSCF) — corrosive fluids, deionized water, and duty where copper-bearing alloys can't go.
- Steel shell (SX2000) — an economical choice for general industrial duty where brass isn't required.
When in doubt, list both fluids on your quote request and you'll get a material recommendation along with the price.
Shell & tube pass configurations: 1-, 2-, and 4-pass
Standard units come in 1-, 2-, and 4-pass tube-side configurations. More passes raise tube-side velocity and heat transfer at the cost of pressure drop; the right answer depends on your flow rates and allowable ΔP. If you're replacing an existing unit, match the pass count stamped on your nameplate. For a new application, send your duty conditions and the sizing comes back with the pass count worked out — not just a price.

Replacing a legacy ITT Standard heat exchanger
Three things off the nameplate identify almost any ITT Standard shell & tube unit: the model designation, the size code, and the pass count. With those — or a photo of the nameplate — you'll get a cross-reference to current Standard Xchange production and a drop-in quote, including legacy units sold under the American Standard name.
Three ways to go, depending on the condition of your unit:
- Direct replacement — a like-for-like, current-production unit matched off your nameplate.
- Bundle or parts only — tube bundles, gaskets, and zinc anodes for serviceable shells are on the parts page.
- New sizing — duty changed? Send fluids, flow rates, temperatures, and allowable pressure drop for a fresh selection.
You're quoting with Southgate Process Equipment, an authorized Standard Xchange distributor for more than 25 years of matching legacy ITT Standard nameplates to current production.
Frequently asked questions
- Are the BCF, SSCF, and SX2000 model families still in production?
- Yes. BCF, HCF, HFF, SSCF, and SX2000 all remain in the current Standard Xchange catalog, manufactured in Cheektowaga, NY. Your old model number usually crosses directly to a current unit.
- Should you replace the whole unit or just the tube bundle?
- On smaller fixed-tubesheet units, replacing the complete unit is often the economical choice. On larger units, replacing the bundle alone can save real money. You'll get pricing on both options so the comparison is easy.
- How do you choose between 1-, 2-, and 4-pass configurations?
- More tube-side passes mean higher velocity and better heat transfer, but more pressure drop. Replacing an existing unit? Match the pass count on your nameplate. Sizing a new application? Send flow rates and allowable pressure drop, and the recommendation comes back with the pass count worked out.
- Brass, stainless, or steel shell — which one do you need?
- Brass-shell models (BCF, HCF, HFF) handle fresh cooling water economically. 316 stainless (SSCF) covers corrosive fluids and deionized water. Steel shell (SX2000) is the economical pick for general industrial duty where brass isn't required. When in doubt, send both fluids with your quote request.
- What information do you need to send for a quote?
- For a replacement: the nameplate model and serial number — or a clear photo of the nameplate. For a new sizing: the fluids on each side, flow rates, inlet and outlet temperatures, and allowable pressure drop.
